QTDesigner file cannot be edited

If  an object ( dialog) is created NOT using GUI ( QTDesigner ) but directly by  C code, the uic compiler created  "xxx.ui"  file can  be edited (using QTDesigner) but the editing DOES NOT TAKE an effect.  The "xxx.ui" file is updated , but never actually used.
