On large traces the timeline is still very memory hungry.

We can probably use files for the cached geometry when we switch zoom levels, rather than keep all the zoom levels in memory (which would also prompt us to show a progress indicator when loading them ...). In addition we may be able to use a better indexing strategy for the geometry in order to reduce its size.
