Application does not show up when run in iOS 10 simulator

When running in release mode a black screen with statusbar is shown, in debug mode it crashes with this backtrace (see attached image)

Running on device works as expected. Running the installed app from simulator's home screen without going through Creator works as expected. Running on simulator from Xcode works as expected.
