Deploying and running applications in target device results in "Failed to start" message

When deploying and running applications in target device, appcontroller reports "Failed to start". This happens on Toradex Apalis iMX6 at least, but might also happen on other targets.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Launch Qt Creator and choose example "Qt Charts"
2. Build and launch the application on target device

--> Appcontroller prints environment variables used to launch the program and then reports "Failed to start". Setting debug logging on has no apparent effect.
