Properties and Keyframes Disappear when using the curve editor

When you add a keyframe and move it around in the curve editor the properties and item will disappear from the outliner, also deleting the keyframes from the timeline. Closing and re-opening the curve editor does not bring them back, going from edit mode and back again doesn't bring them back either.
