QtQuick.Controls don't show properties for background and other hidden objects

When I create a custom control, certain items become hidden and are only available in the Text editor.  For example: When I make a custom button, I set the background rectangle to background: Rectangle {}

When I do this I lose the ability in the properties panel to change any of the Rectangle Properties UNLESS i go into the text editor and click anywhere inside the Rectangle code.
